Body language Interview dos and donâts by Michael Cheary It can take anywhere between five and 30 seconds for a person to form an opinion of you⦠First impressions are not only vital to the success of your interview, theyâre also nearly impossible to change. And whilst preparing for common interview questions is a key part of nailing the interview, your body language might be saying more than your answers.To make sure you donât end your interview before itâs even begun, hereâs our guide to the doâs and donâts of interview body language:Body language: interview dos:Walk in confidentlyâ" Itâs important you look as professional as possible from the outset. As soon as you walk into the building youâll begin to be judged on your behaviour. There are even instances where recruiters watch from their office as candidates arrive, to see how their body language changes.Deliver a firm handshake Come on too weak and youâll seem submissive, but come on too strong and you could be seen to be trying too har d. Keep it firm, but try not to crush their fingers. Finally, to avoid awkward situations, always remember to let go.Sit up straightâ" Avoid being too stiff, but try to sit up straight, keeping the small of your back against the chair. Keep your legs straight and as still as possible. Itâs OK to lean forward slightly every so often, as it shows the interviewer that youâre listening, but donât overdo it.Keep eye contact â" Maintaining eye contact shows the interviewer youâre not intimidated, and that youâre taking everything in. If you feel uncomfortable, look away for a few seconds or try looking at their nose. Around 10 seconds of good eye contact at a time is a good guideline.Smileâ" Recruiters seldom employ miserable people. Itâs OK to be nervous, but something as simple as a smile will make you look more relaxed, comfortable and personable. To put it simply, it will make you more likeable.Watch your handsâ" Itâs fine to be animated and gesticulate with your han ds to make a point, but donât go overboard. Keep your arms uncrossed and your hands away from your face (touching your nose or ear is sometimes said to indicate lying). If youâre worried about keeping still, ask if you can take notes. It makes you look like youâre paying attention, and also keeps your hands busy.Other things to do: turn your phone off, keep your head up, keep your feet still.How to: deal with stress in an interviewJob interview weaknesses Body language: interview donâts:Be overconfidentâ" Arrogance is not a good look. Walking into an interview thinking that youâve already got the job can be detrimental. Remember: arrogance and confidence is not the same thing.Offer a weak handshake â" A weak handshake not only indicates a lack of confidence, it can also be very awkward. Try and mirror your interviewerâs handshake, and apply the same amount of pressure. Seems obvious, but youâd be surprised how many people get this wrong. N.B. It is never acceptable t o fist-bump an interviewer explosion or no explosion.Slouchâ" Bad posture can make you look bored and uninterested. The same goes for crossing your arms and legs. Ok, so you might just be cold, but this can often be seen negatively. Effectively, you are closing yourself off from the situation.Stare â" Itâs always important to maintain eye contact, but thereâs definitely a limit. Donât make it too intense. Thereâs a fine line between being attentive and being frightening. Finally, always remember to blink.Play with your pen/hair â" Really think about this one. It seems so obvious, but as with most body language, you often donât know youâre doing it. Be aware of any bad habits you have before your interview, and keep them in the back of your mind. If youâre not aware of any, try asking a few (good) friends. Just try not to take it personallyFidget â" Try to avoid moving around too much. Nervously moving your feet or constantly changing position will only make you lo ok awkward and uncomfortable. Expertise is the foundation of lasting and successful personal brands. Charisma and style may be great, but unless your personal brand accurately communicates your expertise, your career wont achieve its full potential. Perception equals reality; your expertise must be genuine and your personal brand must reflect your expertise at every interaction. Origins of expertise Your core value proposition is ultimately based on a combination of your accumulated experience, knowledge, and perspective plus your ability to share it with your market. You share your expertise both as information and tools communicated in print or in person, or as products and services you offer to others. How do experts communicate their expertise? Conor Neill, a professor at the IESE Business School in Barcelona, addressed the foundations of expertise-based personal brands in a thought-provoking recent Rhetorical Journey blog post, What Makes An Expert Different? A couple of the expert characteristics he listed really resonated with me, such as Choosing Mastery. In Conor Neills words: Choose continuous learning. Choose to read, to review, to focus intensely on a continuous process of learning in the specific field in which they are experts. Go deep rather than go broad. Another key expert differentiator was to regularly interview other experts looking for patterns and best practice. What makes a wealthy expert? In addition to addressing other aspects of What Makes an Expert Different?, he also addressed four additional things the set wealthy experts apart from plain experts. The two points I liked the best were: Packaging their knowledge. This involves writing, speaking, recordingputting knowledge into a form that people are willing to purchase. Campaign versus promoting their knowledge. Wealthy experts create an ongoing series of interactions that lead to further interactions. Checklist for evaluating your personal brand Improving your personal brand begins by evaluating your current personal brand. Start by asking yourself the following questions: Position. Have I identified an area where I can go deep, instead of broad? Potential. Is the area I have identified a growing and profitable? Expertise. Is my personal brand based on sharing genuinely helpful, actionable, and relevant information? Delivery. Do I organize my messages in an easy-to-follow and easy-to-remember manner? Brevity. Do I respect my markets time by editing my writing to the bone, and ending my speeches slightly ahead of time? Packaging. Does the personal brand package my expertise with an easy-to-read design that pre-sells the value of my information and my ability to competently deliver? Marketing funnel. Does each message, each interaction, pave the way for the next step in a lasting relationship? Take the time to review your recent marketing and sales messages from the perspectives of your market. Do your recent blog posts lead others to view you as an expert in your field? What steps can you take to create messages with more persuasive examples of your expertise? 9 Crucial Life Lessons To Learn Before Midlife Part of Kathy Caprinos new series Finding Brave At 57 years old, Iâm able to look back and view my life in an utterly different light from when I was 40, 30 or 20. So much of what I believed was crucial to my success and happiness when I was in my 20s and 30s proved to be erroneous and misguided. And most of those misguided notions were based on the âshoulds â we are taught and hear every day what society, our families, or the âgroup thinkâ deems as âsuccessâ (meaning: make a lot of money, have a big house, rise to a high level in corporate America, strive for power and influence, etc.). The problem is that these outer measures of âsuccessâ simply cannot and will not give us the fulfillment, meaning and wholehearted contentment and peace weâre longing for. Interestingly, I achieved all of those measures of success at one point or another, and literally none of them have come close to yielding the happiness and fulfillment I craved. On the other hand, the endeavors that have made me who I am today (and paved the way for so much more joy and deep fulfillment) are all around experiencing wholehearted love, honesty, compassion, healing, building strong boundaries, mustering intense commitment, taking big risks, and bravely standing up for who I really am at my core, and making as good use of that in the world as I can. Iâve seen in working with and coaching thousands of people over the past 12 years that itâs the very things that society warns us against, that tend to yield the most powerful returns in our lives. Society tends to subtly or overtly instruct us NOT to risk, NOT to follow our passions, NOT to rise up and speak up and stand up for authentic ourselves (if youâre a woman even more so) or do the âstupidâ thing that you feel in your heart is the right direction for who you really are. But societal thinking is often dead wrong. In looking back, Iâve found there are 9 powerful lessons of my life that I wish Iâd understand long before now. If I had known these 30 years ago, I would have not wasted so much time and energy on the wrong choices. The top 9 lessons we need to learn before midlife are: #1: Make a brave decision on what you want to stand for Iâve worked now with hundreds of adult children of narcissists around the world, and many others who were treated terribly and emotionally manipulated as children and adults. When this happens to us as young children, our development is thwarted, and we find it very difficult to ever believe weâre âgood enoughâ or to speak up and stand up for who we really are (or even to dare to figure out what that is.) Even if we werenât mistreated as children, so many donât take a stand on the life they want to live. It took me until I was 41 years old to start standing up and speaking up powerfully for myself and my life, and never again will I let others define or suppress me. Before itâs too late, you need to âfind your braveâ and make a powerful stand about who you want to be in the world, and what you stand for. Itâs also time to STOP tolerating and allowing what you can no longer accept, in your life and in the world. Make the decision today to become the person you will be proud and honored to be, so you have no regrets when the time comes for you to leave this life. What do you want to stand for, starting right now? #2: Never compromise your soul There are things that itâs ok to compromise on â" perhaps the size of your home, or the geographic location of your job, or the length of your commute, or where youâll go for summer vacation. But itâs NOT ok to compromise your soul. If you do, disastrous outcomes will occur. Know what keeps your spirit alive, and honor that with all youâve got. For me, thatâs truth, transparency, compassion, strength and integrity. For years I couldnât freely express any of those without punishment or suppression. If I canât live those qualities in my work or my relationships, I start to wither, fail and disappear. But Iâve learned whatâs required to honor my soul, and I wonât compromise it ever again. What do you need to do to keep your spirit alive? #3: Engage your wisdom and discernment when you choose whom to love and trust The people you choose to enter into relationships with â" be it through marriage, friendship, business partnerships, work colleagues and those you hire to work with and for you â" will dramatically impact the quality and condition of your life. Donât let people into your life who will hurt or demean, diminish and mistreat you. Simply donât allow it. If you continually attract people who hurt or abuse you, you have to look at what is inside of you that needs healing so you wonât repeat or continue to hook into abusive patterns over and over. Be incredibly discerning about who you will give your heart and trust to. And if and when they violate your trust, care and respect, donât wait to do something self-affirming and powerful about it. Who is in your life today that you now need to move away from? #4: Donât wait one single minute more to express and honor your creativity For so many years, I didnât see myself as creative â" I thought of myself as the âmoney bagsâ for my family. I thought other people in my family and life were the creative ones. But thatâs simply not true. I just hadnât allowed myself to see whatâs inside of me. Or more aptly put, I let so many of my creative abilities from my childhood and my teen years go underground â" I didnât understand how valuable they are. Once I began to honor and nurture the creative force inside, my world changed overnight, and my work became a vehicle through which I could express my creative longings and abilities. Iâd be millionaire if I had a dollar for every professional woman who has told me that sheâs dying of boredom and meaninglessness in her work, and that thereâs a creative side of her thatâs bursting to come forward. The truth is this: Writers write, painters paint, dancers dance. Just DO the thing youâre desperate to do. You donât have to throw your whole career out the window to honor your creativity. Just pick up that paint brush and start committing to painting, today. Just that step will improve your life. What creative urge are you desperate to bring forward in your life today? #5: Get help when donât have the strength or power to change whatâs necessary This one is really simple. When you feel that you canât do what you want to alone, then go get some help. Donât wait. Reach out to a mentor, a friend, an ally, someone who loves and respects you, and sees the future vision of you before itâs hatched. Donât wait on the sidelines for years and years thinking âI donât have what it takes to do this.â The truth is, maybe you donât have what it takes right now, but with the right kind of help, you will. What help can you ask for right now in your life, to get moving towards what you really want? #6: Donât break yourself against what is For years, I stayed stuck in lousy situations, jobs and relationships because I didnât want to face reality â" that I needed a BIG change in my life and in how I was operating in the world, if I wanted to be happy. I broke myself against my reality, instead of going with the flow of it, and changing course, or even making tiny pivots and revisions that would get me out of the bad scenarios I continually attracted. Donât break yourself against your reality â" change it. And doing that doesnât mean you have to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Figure out some small steps you can take to take today to make a discernible difference in your situation, and start doing them. What reality are you breaking yourself against today? #7: Heal your relationship with money and donât poison yourself with it In looking back on what I learned about money as a child, and how I began to relate to it, I see now that I developed some very negative and unhealthy ideas about money. The worst was this idea: âIâll always make a lot of money in my work, but Iâll feel like a prostitute doing it.â Meaning, I began to feel in my corporate life that the only way to make a lot of money was to sell my soul, hate what I did and the people I did it with, and compromise who I really was â" to sell myself for the almighty dollar. These negative beliefs will control how you relate to, and attract (or repel) money, unless you address your relationship with money and heal your money story. Look back on your childhood and ask yourself âWhat did I learn from my family and childhood about how to view and relate to money?â Was it with power or weakness, secrecy or openness, shame or pride, courage or fear, love or hatred, resentment or happy expectation? Who controlled the money and who gave up control? When you write out your money story from the beginning of time until now, youâll see patterns that are alive today that are keeping you from embracing money as a positive energy form in your life. What is your money story, and how is it holding you back from a healthy relationship with it? #8 Donât waste one second of time on âshouldâ As one who explores issues of gender identity, unconscious bias and conformity, I see so clearly now how societyâs (and our âtribeâs) rules about what is feminine, and what women âshouldâ do, be and act like, have been so constraining for me, personally and professionally. And I see now how expectations and projections about what is âmasculineâ suppress men from their authentic selves as well. I see too how my role in my family growing up led me to focus keenly on living up to what I felt others wanted of me, in order to make them proud or to feel loved and accepted. All of these are the âshouldsâ of my life, and caving to the âshouldsâ (othersâ expectations and demands on how you should live and behave) just canât lead to a happy life. As someone so wisely said, âStop shoulding all over yourself.â Stop responding to what you feel is obligation, and start doing what you truly want to do, the way you want to do it. Then deal powerfully with the results and outcomes of that. How are you behaving today that is all about âshouldâ rather than what you authentically want to do? #9 Let go of the pain, anger and resentment Wow. I, like you Iâm guessing, have experienced so much pain, anger, disappointment resentment and confusion in my lifetime. From relationships that devastated me, to jobs that crushed me, to colleagues who turned on me â" Iâve experienced heartbreak that has brought me to my knees. And I know you have too. Life is full of incredibly hard bumps that can leave us broken and bloodied. But life can also be so very stunningly beautiful, shining and radiant that youâre brought to your knees with amazing gratitude and humility at the sheer beauty and wonder of it. So Iâve learned that itâs a choice â"to be either consumed with the terrible pain and anger, or to find a way to heal and release it. To stay stuck, drowning in the poison of hate and devastated dreams, or to find it in your heart to forgive, see your part in it, let go, and move on to keep building a meaningful and rewarding life. Iâve learned that holding onto the pain and anger misses the whole point of living. We didnât come here, to this planet at this time, to spend our entire life here in a state of rage and disillusionment. We came here to learn, grow and thrive.
